The main areas of the development of the program on the Holy History of the Old Testament within the subject “Law of God” (by the materials of the All-Russian Congress of Law Teachers of Secondary Educational Institutions in St. Petersburg in 1909)

The article discusses the main areas in the study of the Holy History of the Old Testament within the framework of the subject “Law of God” on the example of the materials of the All-Russian Congress of the teachers of secular secondary educational institutions, held in St. Petersburg in 1909. The journals and minutes of the meetings of the Congress served as an empirical basis for the study. The relevance of the study lies in the appeal to the historical experience of studying biblical disciplines in the modern theory and practice of spiritual education. The principle of historicism and a concrete historical approach allowed the author to show the specifics of teaching the subject “Law of God” in secondary educational institutions of the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 20th century. The paper analyzes the polemical speeches of the clergy regarding the content and ideological orientation of the program on the Holy History of the Old Testament. The speakers of the Congress noted that in relation to other subjects of the course, the program on the Old Testament within the framework of teaching the Law of God is significantly overloaded and needs to be reasonably reduced without prejudice to the spiritual and moral component of the educational process. In conclusion, the author updates the questions about the content of the program on the Holy History of the Old Testament within the framework of the subject “Law of God” and about the application of its main ideas at the present stage of the implementation of spiritual and moral pedagogical activity.
