Abstract

The article presents an overview of the opinions of governing bishops in the early 20th century about the necessity to change certain elements of the Church liturgical life in order to bring it into uniformity. In the framework of the subject in question, the author considers a topical issue which is still important and which is associated with understanding the divine service by the clergy and laity, with conscious participation in it, and also outlines ways to solve it at the present stage of the Russian Orthodox Church.
