The article studies the life and ministry of one of the greatest prophets St. John the Baptist. The article analyzes and compares various facts of the biography of the Baptist of the Lord, reflected in extra-Gospel sources, namely the Holy Tradition, “Jewish Antiquities” by Josephus Flavius, and the Apocrypha. The relevance of the study is due to the need to systematize the works concerning the last Old Testament prophet and the first servant of the incarnate God the Word. The scientific novelty of the study is determined by the commentary and critical understanding of the hypothesis about the possible attitude of John the Baptist to the Qumran community. The work uses methods of analysis and synthesis, deduction and generalization in concretizing the results obtained during the study; comparative theological and dialectical methods made it possible to compare various opinions of secular scholars and theologians on the issue under consideration; the hermeneutic method was used in interpreting the texts; intertextual analysis helped to establish connections between the texts of the Holy Scripture. The author draws conclusions regarding the lifestyle and causes of death of St. John the Baptist based on extra-Gospel sources, presents the tables demonstrating the significant difference between his preaching and the nature of his ministry from the teachings of the representatives of the Qumran community.
