Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of various references in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments about the use of wine and other alcoholic beverages that were widespread at that time. These references can often be found on the pages of sacred books; many of them are of a different nature. So, the Book of Genesis says about negative consequences of drinking alcohol (Noah, Lot), the Book of Numbers contains the law on Nazarites, whose vows included refusal to drink alcohol. Absolute sobriety was also a prerequisite for the ministry of the Old Testament priesthood (as described in the ritual ordinances of the Book of Leviticus). The condemnation of excessive drinking is also found in the prophetic and teaching books of the Old Testament. At the same time, the sacred texts also contain positive statements about the use of wine, which appears on the pages of the Bible not only as a vital product for the population of Old Testament Palestine, but also as a symbol of the fullness of God’s blessing. So, for example, in the book of the prophet Isaiah, rivers of wine are predicted at the onset of the Messianic Kingdom (Isa. 25.6). In the New Testament, the image of wine is also quite common. The mention of this drink is immediately associated with the conclusion of this very Covenant between God and humanity (the events of the Last Supper). It should be noted that a number of New Testament texts warn Christians about the dangers of the vice of drunkenness. The Bible does not contain any instructions for believers to absolutely prohibit the use of alcohol, but alcohol abuse is always condemned directly or indirectly.
