Abstract

The article defines the possibilities of using pedagogical potential of the Orthodox Sunday school in the process of forming students’ historical thinking. The author reveals the pedagogical advantages of the Orthodox Sunday school in the development of historical thinking and its culture among schoolchildren of different ages; substantiates the thesis that modern Russian society is in dire need of this type of thinking. The work uses systemic and problem-­historical analysis, according to the research topic. The author focuses on historical facts that testify to attempts at the state level to form an Orthodox worldview and a culture of historical thinking in society, using the pedagogical capabilities of parochial schools of the 19th century. It was this educational structure that in many ways managed to create the necessary conditions for the education of historical thinking by building a curriculum around the obligatory subject for studying “The Law of God”. The article concludes that modern Orthodox Sunday schools, being, in fact, the successors of parochial schools, are called upon to use the experience of past centuries for their internal development as an educational institution and the qualitative formation of a culture of historical thinking, and ultimately a holistic Orthodox mindsets of the younger generation.
