“Those who desire to partake of the Divine Pascha...“: an exegesis of the compositional dynamics of the sticheron of the first week of the Lenten Triodion

This article explores the compositional and theological dynamics of the sticheron for Thursday of the first week of the Lenten Triodion, which reveals Great Lent as a path of spiritual transformation and ascent to Easter. The relevance of this study stems from the importance of interpreting hymnographic texts in the context of patristic exegesis, as well as the need to overcome the formal perception of Lent in modern consciousness.
The main goal of this work is to identify the structure and reveal the theological content of the analyzed hymn, understanding the Holy Forty Days as a holistic spiritual journey to the Resurrection of Christ. The scientific novelty lies in the first comprehensive analysis of this sticheron, combining its composition, rhetoric, lexical-semantic system, and biblical intertextuality as a model for the formation of ascetic consciousness in liturgical practice. The methodological framework includes historical-philological and rhetorical analysis, intertextual analysis, theological exegesis, and contextual analysis, taking into account the stichera’s place in the structure of the liturgical cycle and its imagery.
As a result, it has been established that the text has an ascending compositional dynamic: from the desire to partake of Easter through penitential purification, spiritual armor, and moral warning to the final following of the Savior. Particular attention is paid to grammatical constructions that reinforce the conciliar nature of the liturgical address and to the patristic interpretation of biblical allusions. The sequence of imperative appeals and the symbolic meaning of key images are analyzed, demonstrating how the stichera models real ascetic experience. The findings have scientific, theological, and ecclesiastical practical significance, deepening our understanding of the traditions of Great Lent and their role in fostering Orthodox consciousness. They also make a significant contribution to the development of modern hymnographic exegesis.
