Updating “Teaching on family life stock by St. Philaret of Moscow” in the context of modern educational system

“The Longer Christian Catechism of the Orthodox Catholic Eastern Church,” written by St.Philaret, as well as the “Words and Speeches” spoken by him were summarized in 1894 by priest Gregory Vysheslavsky in the collection “Teaching on the Family Life Stock by St.Philaret of Moscow.” The relevance of this study is due to the lack in secular and Orthodox pedagogy of an analysis of the works of St. Philaret (Drozdov) concerning issues of organizing family life. The comparison method made it possible to identify theoretical foundations of the organization of family life, described in the “Teaching...” by St. Philaret, in parallel connection with the provisions of the theory of modern pedagogy of family education. The generalization method made it possible to identify five fundamental instructions of the saint regarding the upbringing of parents and children. The basic principle of education, according to the archpastor, should be piety, i.e. the creation in the family of an Orthodox, spiritual environment that will provide children with the opportunity for guaranteed religious socialization. As a result of the study, prospects for adapting the main provisions of the
“Teaching on Family Life Stock” into the theory of modern secular pedagogy were identified. The author believes that St.Philaret’s instructions on family life can be used in the catechetical activities of clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church.
