The article discusses important aspects of a topical problem dealing with raising and preservation of the institution of the family under the conditions of social, spiritual and moral instability of society at the end of the 19th century. The author, on the basis of the epistolary heritage of
St. Ambrose of Optina, draws attention to the most important components of human life and upbringing, to the principle of Christcentricity in the exhortations of the reverend elder, to spiritual wisdom, as well as an extensive experience of communication with representatives of various classes, which has come down to us through letters and memories of his contemporaries.
